With consideration for flexible shift structures (e.g., 3 days on/3 days off or 4 days on/4 days off), this role offers balance and challenge in equal measure.
Our client is a key player in the building materials industry, delivering high-quality sand and associated products to customers across New Zealand. Currently operating a fleet of 3 vessels ranging in size from 48m – 58m
The Role
As the vessel Master or Mate, you’ll be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the vessel, ensuring all navigational, operational, and safety requirements are met. Key responsibilities include:
- Navigating the barge in compliance with Maritime laws and regulations.
- Managing and mentoring the crew, developing their skills to meet operational demands.
- Ensuring all documentation, including the Maritime Transport Operator Certificate (MTOC), is up-to-date.
- Overseeing health, safety, and environmental standards, including conducting safety drills.
- Coordinating with management on manning levels and operational planning.

What We’re Looking For
- Commercially certified Master with relevant MNZ qualifications.
- Extensive experience in barging, shipping, and navigation, including familiarity with local waterways.
- Proven understanding of maritime safety systems, risk management, and operational compliance.
- Mechanical acumen and experience managing vessel maintenance.
- Strong leadership skills with experience in training and developing seafarers.
